As the brand Moon Chang is born with the love of Moon’s dog, Venus In Black, We seek a sustainable and ethical approach to the design and production process.
1.Sustainable Materiality/Care label: Moon Chang works on enhancing human and animal rights, and to abandon toxic and non recycled materials, animal leather and furs. Moon Chang develops the in-house fabrications which look like leather and fur, but they are truly made out of recycled and collected materials from the production process. Especially, the fake leather which is made out of recycled plastic enhances the functionality of wearers, which is waterproof and wash-free. Moreover, Moon Chang sourced the recycled fabrics from the local fashion market in Seoul, Korea and NY and Italy. In Particular, we use recycled materials/textiles from Global Recycle Standard Certified, as well as, we do the chemical safety testing at Intertek every season. Moreover, we put efforts on care labels to educate our customers by providing all the information for durability and longevity of clothes.
2.Handmade and Ethical Production: Moon Chang produces all the handmade and artisanal collections, which highlight the craftsmanship. Moreover, we promote safety and a healthy environment in production, small and slow fashion production. We don't have overstock, we design products with seasonless and trendless, so that they can last long. I wish the fashion industry to be more seasonless and trendless. Seasonless and trendless here can be timeless techniques and fabrics, also new approaches to the design and production process. The trend and season should be followed by designers, what designers create and suggest should become its own season and trend. I hope not to limit fashion and art in certain seasons, trends or numbers, especially during this new era.
3.Zero-Waste/Size Grading: When dressing humans, we always challenge ourselves to break the stereotypes of beauty, especially in the fashion industry. Many people who desire fashion are willing to fit their bodies to meet fashion’s standard beauty ideals. However, the brand, Moon Chang does not have distinctive sizes, we only have size 0, meaning oversize, this one size has been designed to fit from XS to XL. Aesthetically, We found beauty by building exaggerated and oversized silhouettes and textures for the human body as the symbols for breaking the norms and expectations of a female body and beauty standards in our society that we slave to. For petswear, we do have sizes due to the differences between breeds and sizes.
4.Fabric Allowance and ZERO WASTE: Moon Chang uses our own zero waste pattern making methods developed by couture, millinery and tailoring techniques so that we proceed the environmental practice to reduce the fabric waste. We minimize our fabric waste allowance to 1%, and with the leftovers, we turn them into hair accessories and dust bags to use all the fabrics without waste. For wholesale/retail shipping, there are certain guidelines to follow, such as using recycled plastic bags for sanitary issues, therefore we source the plastic bags made out of recycled plastics, and follow the lightest weight limit, to reduce the weights and numbers of cargo boxes for shipping, which also relates to carbon footprint.
5.Sustainable Packaging Initiation: FOR DTC, WE USE OUR HANDMADE DUST BAG FOR PACKAGING. wholesale/retail shipping, there are certain guidelines to follow, such as using recycled plastic bags for sanitary issues, therefore we source the plastic bags made out of recycled plastics, and follow the lightest weight limit, to reduce the weights and numbers of cargo boxes for shipping.
6.Carbon Footprint: We track the carbon footprint to reduce excessive carbon emission. We prefer to ship our products by A ship as well as sharing the carriers to minimize the pollution. However, sometimes, it is inevitable to use AN aIR FLIGHT SHIPMENT due to the deadline of the shipment, therefore, our brand builds a Moon and Venus’ urban garden at our studio and factory, to give back to the environment what we use.
